REFEREE CERTIFICATION

It takes training and experience to make a good referee.

A candidate must attend a Level 1 N.O.C.P. Clinic, pass a quiz (50% or higher) and meet skating assessment requirements in order to get a "1C" certification.

To earn higher certification, the ref must be evaluated on the ice during game situations. The level of certification a ref has indicates the division and level of play she or he is entitled to officiate as described in the table below.

Players, coaches and spectators are expected to treat officials with respect — before, during and after the game. It is accepted that refs — like the rest of us — can make mistakes. It is unfortunate if a mistake affects the outcome of the game, but that’s life. All participants in the game accept that the refs are well qualified, capable, fair-minded, and are doing their best to call a good game.

Refereeing is a great way for older players to expand their knowledge of the game, help the league and other players, get extra ice time, and earn some pocket money.

CRA is eager to certify more teen-age players as referees. CRA Referees are paid for each game they officiate.

The following is copied from the ORA Operating Manual – Officiating Development section.

COACHING PHILOSOPHY

Winning vs Success
"A medal is only a thing, an object. The race, the achievement, is what's most important."
"Winning isn't everything ... striving to win is. "
"Life doesn’t require that we be the best ... only that we try our best."

Fair Play Code for Coaches
I will be reasonable when scheduling games and practices, remembering that young athletes have other interests and obligations.
I will teach my athletes to play fairly and to respect the rules, officials and opponents.
I will ensure that all athletes get equal instruction, support and playing time.
I will not ridicule or yell at my athletes for making mistakes or for performing poorly. I will remember that children play to have fun and must be encouraged to have confidence in themselves.
I will make sure that equipment and facilities are safe and match the athletes' ages and abilities.
I will remember that children need a coach they can respect. I will be generous with praise and set a good example.
I will obtain proper training and continue to upgrade my coaching skills.
